MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS

Medigap Insurance: Helping Cover Medicare’s Extra Costs

Millions of Americans need affordable health care every year. Medicare helps these Americans afford their healthcare by lowering the cost of common treatments, but there are still out-of-pocket costs. A Medicare Supplemental plan, also known as Medigap insurance, assists in eliminating those out-of-pocket costs.

What’s Medigap Coverage?

Although the goal of Medicare is to cover high medical expenses, you’ll still face a deductible, among other out-of-pocket costs. Medigap is a great way to reduce these costs. It’s easy to see why many insurers refer to these plans as Medicare Supplemental Insurance, as Medigap will supplement your initial Medicare coverage by covering the out-of-pocket costs.

What does a Medigap plan cover?

There are multiple Medigap Plans out there, labeled as plans A-N. All will include different options and payment structures. However, they will generally cover the following items:

  • Certain services not covered by Original Medicare, like blood transfusions or skilled nursing

  • Copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles from Medicare Part A and Part B

  • Emergency care needed during foreign travel

You must carry Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and live within a plan’s coverage area to enroll. Keep in mind, that supplemental plans do not offer Part D prescription coverage.

When can I enroll in a plan?

Between the first day of the month you turn 65 and 6 months after, if you have Medicare Part B, you can enroll in a Medigap plan. If you don’t have Part B coverage, you’ll need to get it before enrolling in a Medigap policy.
