Medicare coverage is health insurance coverage for those 65 years or older and those with certain disabilities, including End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS. You can enroll early, and the benefits start at age 65. This period starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after you turn 65 years old. What happens after your enrollment period will depend on if you want further coverage and when you signed up.
At We Make Medicare Easy, our agents are prepared to help you determine which next steps are right for you.
When Does My Medicare Coverage Start?
When your coverage starts will depend on when you signed up for Medicare. For example, if you signed up in the middle of the month of May, your coverage would not start until the following first of the month or June 1. Medicare coverage will always start on the first of the month.
There are a few special situations in which your coverage will start other than the month after you sign-up:
-
You have health insurance through a job and are still working
-
You’re a volunteer, serving in a foreign country
-
In certain situations where you have TRICARE
What Additional Options Available?
If you already have Medicare coverage such as Original Medicare, which includes Part A and Part B, you can add additional coverage. Additional and alternative coverage options include Part C, Part D and Medigap:
-
Part C is also known as a Medicare Advantage Plan. An alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. It usually includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.
-
Part D is also known as Medicare drug coverage. This plan covers a variety of brand-name and prescription drugs.
-
Medigap is extra insurance coverage you can purchase from a private company that can help pay for the costs of your Original Medicare.
