You have probably heard of the U.S. government’s Medicare program. This is a federally-funded health insurance program. It usually helps older people get insurance after they leave the workforce. However, besides the elderly, other individuals can qualify for Medicare. Still, there are enrollment criteria that applicants might need to meet. Here’s how it works.
Medicare is part of the U.S.’s social security system. It began in the 1960s to address the fact that many senior citizens could not afford health care without health insurance. Over the years, Medicare has grown to include both taxpayer-funded coverage and private Medicare supplements. However, at its core, Medicare contains two types of coverage, referred to as Original Medicare:
Some people choose to buy only Part A coverage, but most people buy Part B as well. It covers more of their everyday medical needs.
Additionally, Part A & Part B coverage don’t apply to every type of medical care or cost. However, a variety of private plans, like Medigap, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage can cover these costs.
When Do I Qualify for Original Medicare?
Medicare coverage starts at Original Medicare. Generally, those who qualify for coverage fall into three groups:
-
People age 65 and older. Older individuals must qualify for social security retirement benefits and have paid Medicare taxes for at least ten years through either their own or their spouse’s employment.
-
Certain younger people with qualifying disabilities, such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
-
Individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Other qualifications might apply, depending on the applicant. For example, some people cannot qualify for other Medicare coverage despite qualifying for Part A & Part B. You might not qualify if you or your spouse have not paid into the Medicare tax system during your working life. There are a variety of other rules that might apply for applicants.
Also, many people qualify for Part A coverage without having to pay a premium. So, it’s beneficial to work with a dedicated insurance agent to determine your coverage needs. If you believe you qualify for Medicare, contact one of our agents to discuss your options for coverage. We can help you determine both your eligibility for coverage and how to enroll.
